How to become a machinist: training and VET step by step

The main route in Spain is the Intermediate VET diploma in Machining. Here you'll find what you study, how to enter with or without lower-secondary, how long it takes, the work placement and where to go next.

Short answer

To become a machinist in Spain, the most direct route is to take the Intermediate VET diploma in Machining (Machining Technician qualification), within the professional family of Mechanical Manufacturing. It lasts 2,000 hours spread over two academic years (work placement included) and you enter with the lower-secondary (ESO) certificate or, if you don't have it, through the entrance exam or by first completing Basic VET. There are also professional certificates in the sector as a shorter, more employment-focused alternative.

The main route: Intermediate VET diploma in Machining

In the Spanish education system, the formal, recognised way to become a machinist is the Intermediate VET programme that leads to the Machining Technician qualification. It belongs to the professional family of Mechanical Manufacturing, the same one that groups other qualifications such as Welding and Boilermaking or Metal Constructions. It is an official qualification of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sport, with a common curriculum across the country that each autonomous community then adapts.

The aim of the programme is to train a professional capable of carrying out machining processes by chip removal, forming and special procedures: setting up and programming machine tools, operating them and verifying the resulting product in line with quality, safety and environmental protection specifications. In practice, this means leaving the programme knowing how to read a drawing, set up a lathe or a milling machine (today almost always CNC) and measure the part to check that it is on size.

What you study: the programme modules

The syllabus is organised into professional modules. These are the ones set by the official qualification (Royal Decree 1398/2007), with their indicative curricular hours according to the Community of Madrid's reference:

The programme is rounded out with cross-cutting modules: Training and career guidance, Business and entrepreneurial initiative, and Technical English. Together you'll cover the three competencies that structure the trade: machining by chip removal (lathe and milling machine), machining by abrasion, electrical discharge machining and special procedures, and machining by cutting and forming. Each of these is also a full qualification from the National Catalogue of Qualifications included in the diploma.

The weight of CNC

The module with the most hours in the programme is Numerical control machining. It's no coincidence: the modern workshop revolves around numerical control, and knowing how to program and operate CNC machines is what will set you apart most when looking for a job. Entry requirements (and how to get in without lower-secondary)

The usual entry point is holding the Lower-Secondary Education Certificate (ESO). Equivalent qualifications also count, such as Technician, Auxiliary Technician or having passed the specific access course for intermediate VET programmes, among others.

Don't have your lower-secondary certificate? You have two paths

You can sit the entrance exam for intermediate VET programmes if you are 17 or turn 17 in the calendar year of the exam; or first complete a Basic VET programme in the Mechanical Manufacturing family, which also gives you direct access to Intermediate VET. Both routes are perfectly valid for ending up in the Machining programme.

Duration and work placement

The programme lasts 2,000 hours spread over two academic years. That total includes the 370 hours of on-the-job training (work placement), that is, the internship at a real company. The work placement is usually concentrated at the end of the second year and is a key part: many students land their first job precisely at the workshop where they did their placement. Bear in mind that, with the VET reform towards the dual model, the timing and format of company-based training may vary depending on the autonomous community and the training centre.

Alternative: professional certificates

If you're looking for a shorter, more direct route to employment, there are professional certificates in the sector, managed by the SEPE (Spanish Public Employment Service). The one closest to this trade is Machining by chip removal (FMEH0109), a level 2 certificate. It accredits a specific professional competency and is valid across the EU, but it is more specific than VET: it isn't equivalent to the Technician qualification, nor does it open the same academic doors. To access a level 2 certificate, the lower-secondary certificate or a certificate of the same level is usually required.

Keep training: related higher VET programmes

With the Machining Technician qualification you can access any branch of the Baccalaureate and, from there or via an entrance exam, a Higher VET programme. The most closely related Higher VET programmes within the Mechanical Manufacturing family are:

  • Higher Technician in Production Programming in Mechanical Manufacturing — the natural step up towards programming and production management.
  • Higher Technician in Mechanical Manufacturing Design — geared towards the design of products and tooling.

These higher VET programmes are the usual route to move from operator to CNC programmer or to more senior positions, with the pay improvement that usually implies (we look at it in detail in the machinist salary guide).

Career paths

The qualification enables you to work in the metal-processing industries, above all in the subsectors of machinery and mechanical equipment manufacturing, electrical and electronic material and equipment, and transport material. Day to day, the most common career paths are:

  • Machine tool operator (lathe, milling machine, grinding machine).
  • Turner, miller or grinder.
  • Numerical control (CNC) machine operator.
  • Part setter and inspector using metrology instruments.

Tips to get started

  1. Check what's on offer in your area. Look for the Machining programme in the official TodoFP search tool and in your community's education department; the availability of places and formats (in-person or dual) changes by province.
  2. Decide your entry route. If you have your lower-secondary certificate, go ahead; if not, plan the entrance exam or a Basic VET programme well in advance.
  3. Get familiar with CNC early. It's the longest module and the one companies value most. Any extra practice adds up.
  4. Take care of the work placement. Treat the internship as a long interview: it's your most direct route to a first contract.
